CHAIN -- Wahoo's
Fish Taco I can't understand a word the woman taking the order is saying. She can't understand a word I'm saying either. "Red or green?" "Huh?" "Sauce." "Oh. Red." "Green?" "Huh?" "Red or green?" "RED." "Red." Somehow it works out in the end, and I walk out with a to-go order of a fish taco and a fish enchilada. The atmosphere is surfer casual...surfboards, skateboards, and stickers. The theme fits the founders…brothers Ed and Mingo Lee, and Wing Lam. The Lee's parents brought the family to the states from Brazil, where they had fled to from China. They ran a successful Chinese restaurant which was offered to the boys when the parents decided to retire. The boys instead suggested their parents lease the restaurant to the employees (they did) and loan the boys some money to start something new (they did that too). "New" was a California version of the fish taco stands in Baja. The menu was decidedly done healthy. The tacos are made on soft steamed corn tortillas, which kind of sucks, as does the cabbage for me. But the fish itself is great so I just plucked it out by hand. The fish is char grilled, cut, and placed in the tacos and other menu items in fillet pieces. It doesn't taste all that fishy (Wife #1 unwittingly pulled out the "tastes like chicken" joke.) It's apparently Mahi-Mahi. The enchiladas are worthwhile. You can have mild or spicy sauce in red or green. Fish is wrapped around a tortilla and topped in the sauce and cheese. Chicken and steak are also available, as is shrimp for some of the menu items. There's also "bowls" if you don't want the tortilla, quesadillas, and taquitos. Sides available with your dish include your choice or black or "white Cajun" beans, and a seasoned white rice. Pretty much everything on the menu is low calorie. It's the Fresh-Mex format with a fishy niche, and that's just fine. Click here to return to tesg's guide to big chain road food consumption |
